Description of the IT research project: Mobile robots enable the autonomously operating smart factory of the future in the context of 5G. In order for the robots to be able to act autonomously, it is necessary to have reliable localization, preferably using the SLAM method. This requires high computing power in the mobile robot, which leads to increased energy consumption and shorter runtime. Therefore, outsourcing the localization by the computationally expensive SLAM method to an edge cloud is an obvious solution. Therefore, in our project we investigate the outsourcing of mobile robot localization to an edge cloud.
