Project’s name: UX4GEAR: User Experience for Generative 3D Content in Automotive Extended Reality
Project description:
The UX4GEAR project explores the integration of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) for the real-time creation of 3D-content within extended reality (XR) applications in the automotive domain. GenAI in this context refers to models capable of generating 3D geometry for virtual scenes, such as text-to-3D or 2D-to-3D models. XR comprises virtual, augmented, and mixed reality technology that blends physical and digital worlds through wearable user devices. The project’s main objective is to develop a novel in-vehicle experience in which adaptive, context-aware 3D content dynamically enhances the driving experience for passengers through useful and enjoyable features.
The first project year focuses on the technical exploration and implementation of GenAI models into a functional prototype capable of generating coherent 3D assets in real-time based on user input and contextual data. In the second year, this technical prototype will be integrated into a concrete XR automotive use case, including both in-cabin and external visualizations, such as dashboard displays and road projections. Throughout the project, the developed prototypes will be evaluated in two empirical user studies. These studies will focus on performance metrics and subjective quantitative measures, including perceived visual quality and realism, overall user experience, cognitive demand, and technology acceptance.
Through this user-centered approach, the UX4GEAR project aims to enable personalized, immersive, and real-time generated 3D content and investigates how the generation quality, spatial placement, and contextual adaptation influence user perception and experience in automotive XR applications.
