Who are you and what do you do? With whom are you collaborating (Industry Partner)?

I’m Pepe, and I’m doing my doctorate at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg in Business Informatics. For my research, I’m working on the interface between IT and economy. My collaborating industry partner is Merck, a global science and technology company. This enables me to gain valuable practical insights and building bridges between research and industry.

Since when are you a Software Campus participant and what do you expect from this program?

Since 2023, I have been part of the Software Campus program. The opportunity to work on my own IT project – alongside an industry partner – is particularly appealing to me. I hope that through this I’m not only allowed to apply my research findings in practice but also to gain valuable experience in leadership. This close interdigitation of science and practice to me is a great opportunity for testing and further developing my ideas directly in a corporate environment.

What is your IT-Project about – core topic – and how could it be used in the long run?

For this project, my team and I do research on how the standard “Module Type Package” (MTP) can be implemented in a laboratory environment. MTP is an innovative standard which allows modular systems to connect to one another flexibly – regardless of the manufacturer. In the long run this could lead to laboratory processes becoming more efficient and adaptive. Especially for pharmaceutical and chemical industries – with their fast-pacing regulations – this approach could be extremely beneficial.

Which app/technical invention is more than essential to you?

Without a doubt: the notes app on my laptop. It may be simple, but to me it’s crucial for capturing thoughts, structuring ideas and organizing my work. Whether it’s spontaneous ideas or to-do lists – without my digital notes, I would quickly lose track of things.

Besides your job and Software Campus, what makes your heart beat faster?

Apart from work, music plays an important role in my life. I love playing the guitar with my friends. It’s the perfect opportunity for me to switch off and recharge my batteries. Music connects; it helps to relax and simply creates a special atmosphere that I certainly wouldn’t want to miss.
