Sven Hertling

Who are you, what do you do and who are your partners?

I have been a research associate at DFKI since February 2015 and I am doing my doctorate in the field of knowledge management. My industry partner is Software AG.
My main areas of interest are: Semantic Web, Semantic Desktop, Knowledge Management, Information Retrieval.

When did you join the Software Campus and why are you in the program?

I joined the Software Campus in 2015.
I am participating in the program because I want to meet new people with innovative ideas and gain practical experience in the industry.

What do you expect from the Software Campus?

On the one hand to gain new insights into the working methods of executives and on the other hand to build up a network of interesting people to stay in contact with after the Software Campus.

What is the content of your IT project and how could it be used in the future?

My IT project helps end users to find their way around (un)known software. For example, through a search engine that can search for possible buttons. For instance, you can search for “Rotate” in VLC or “Double underline” in Word.
Another aspect is to automatically get help from other users. This makes it possible to support processes such as enhancing an image or filling out a travel request.

Which app/technical invention is indispensable for you?

The synchronized calendar on PC and mobile phone is indispensable for me. Otherwise I would not be able to organize all my appointments.

Have you been especially impressed with a particular personality from computer science or management?

I was impressed by Tim Berners-Lee’ s approaches to the Semantic Web that make it possible to process information in a machine-interpretable way. This allows questions such as “How do I find a doctor who is currently open” to be asked and answered.

Do you think there is “the one” quality that a top executive must have today in order to be successful?

Knowledge of human nature in order to correctly understand and motivate a team or a person.

What’s your passion – besides your job and Software Campus?

Sports: In my spare time I supervise a badminton youth group and like to play badminton and tennis myself.
