Who are you and what do you do? Who are your partners?
My name is Jan-Niclas Strüwer and there are two hearts beating in my chest. After my Bachelors degree I started a part-time job as a software engineer at Fraunhofer IEM, because I really enjoy working on “real” projects. The focus of my work is in the area of secure software development. In addition, I am also pursuing my Master studies at the University of Paderborn. My industry partner is Software AG.
When did you join the Software Campus and why are you in the program?
I originally joined the program at the end of 2019, but a skiing accident delayed the start of my project, so that my project will now start on 01.01.2021. The program offers the great opportunity to lead a self-defined project and to do research in your own field of interest. Especially as a student, I see this as an excellent preparation for the later choice of a possible PhD topic. I consider these opportunities for personal and professional development as very valuable.
What is the content of your IT project and how could it be applied in the future?
In my project I am dealing with the topic area DevOps. My primary concern is to support the introduction and further development of DevOps practices through metrics and a maturity model based on tools. For companies, efficient software development is becoming more and more relevant due to ongoing globalisation and digitalisation. Therefore I see a great need to support companies in evaluating and improving their processes.
What fascinates you about IT?
What fascinates me most about computer science is the almost unlimited possibilities it offers. The fact that I can use my laptop to develop something from the comfort of my own home that can theoretically be used by people all over the world.
Which app/technical invention is indispensable for you?
Dockers and in general all the possibilities offered by containerized applications.
Just imagine: Internet breakdown for 1 month – what do you do?
Enjoying the peace and quiet and finally finishing the 20 books that I had only started to read and that are spread around my flat.
What is your heart beating for – besides job and Software Campus?
In my first semester I discovered lacrosse as a sport at university. Today, almost 8 years and countless league games and tournaments all over Europe later, I can say with certainty that lacrosse is the greatest sport in the world for me and I like to spend a large part of my free time with it.
