Dr. Ben Hermann and Dr. Lisa Nguyen participating at the Heidelberg Laureate Forum 2019

Software Campus Alumni Dr. Ben Hermann and current participant Dr. Lisa Nguyen have qualified for the participation at the 7th Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF) (22 September to 27 September 2019). Both of them are currently doing research at the specialist group Softwaretechnik at the Heinz-Nixdorf-Institute of the University Paderborn and are cooperating at Software Campus with Software AG.

The HLF is one of the most prestigious conferences in the department of mathematics and computer science. At HLF young scientists can meet and network with renowned scientists of their field. Thereby the HLF is more of a networking event rather than a typical conference so that especially the subject related exchange is in the focus. In the course of the 7th HLF plenty of workshops, presentations and networking events are taking place at which the laureates of the most important scientific awards like the ACM A.M. Turing Award, the Abel Prize, the ACM Prize in Computing, the Fields-Medal and the Nevanlinna-Prize are participating aswell.

Every year the foundation only invites 200 young scientists working in mathematics or computer science from all over the world. To receive such an exclusive invitation the applicants have to undergo an elaborate application and selection procedure. Therefore they have to submit at least two letters of recommendation of renowned scientists with their application documents. Ben Hermann and Lisa Nguyen were able to assert themselves in the application process against a total of 841 applicants and finally achieved to be part of those 200 young scientists who were allowed to participate at this year’s HLF.

“My motivation rested on three things: On the one hand, to get to know other young scientists who work outside my fields of work in order to find new and/or interesting combinations of research fields. On the other hand, many award winners of the highest scientific prizes in the research fields will be present during the week in September. I hope to learn a lot about research strategy. Finally, there will also be the opportunity to exchange ideas with the other young scientists in order to learn from each other,”, says Ben.

Lisa Nguyen: „I am currently in the last months of my PhD, so when I heard about the HLF, I thought it would be a great opportunity to exchange with other young researchers from different areas of computer science and broaden my horizons for my future career. Meeting with the laureates is also an exciting perspective, and I am looking forward to learn from their experience.“

The Software Campus may have benefited her application for the HLF: „My current Software Campus project had a large influence on my application, too. In addition to being directly associated with my latest research, my role as the project lead and grant recipient, and the partnership with the industry partner are also unusual for a PhD student. I believe that this helped shape my application in a positive way.“,, said Lisa.

We congratulate our two participants on their participation at this year’s HLF, the expectations are high: “I am looking forward to the apparently very collaborative and relaxed atmosphere of the event. The week in Heidelberg will certainly be super exciting. On the one hand, of course, professionally, on the other hand, of course, at the method level,” says Ben.
